Deferments & Cancellations

  Applying for Deferment or Cancellation

  • When you enter a status that will qualify you for  deferment or  cancellation of payment, you must complete a deferment or cancellation form for the year you are beginning.  If you are the borrower, it is your responsibility to file for deferment or cancellation in a timely manner. Doing so will  postpone your bills.

  • At the end of every year, you must file a deferment or cancellation form for the year just completed and indicate if you expect to be eligible again for the next year.

  • If you expect to be eligible for deferment or cancellation again the next year, indicate this in the "Anticipated Separation Date" box on the deferment or cancellation form.  Doing so will postpone your bills for another year.

  • Complete the form that is appropriate to your individual situation:

     Student Loan Cancellation
     Student Loan Deferment

If you have any questions about deferment benefits, contact the  Student Loan Office at (607) 255-7234 or via e-mail at  uco-loans@cornell.edu

Important Information about Graduate Aid Deferments

  • To be sure that you are continuously deferred during your graduate program, check with your  servicer and follow deferment directions for each semester you are  half-time (5-8 credits).

  • Check that you are at least half-time (5-8 credits) and have completed your  official university registration before the  NSC reporting has been done by Cornell University.

  • For students receiving a graduate federal student loan, borrowing thorugh a graduate federal student loan will automatically defer your graduate loans each semester, but you should ensure that the service is deferring your undergraduate loans as well, particularly if your undergraduate loans were from a different lender.

  • If you stop borrowing through graduate loans but are still attending half-time at Cornell University, you can request an education deferment for your graduate loans by following the directions above.
